The Cork Institute of Technology commissioned Baseline to develop a new brand identity that would project the Institute as a National brand. The Institute encompasses a number of colleges apart from the campus at Bishopstown in Cork and the agreed brief was to develop a strong identity that was well grounded and suitable for application to a wide spectrum of material and brand assets. CIT is a national brand, a brand that can attract the best staff and students from anywhere in Ireland or abroad, a brand that leads the way and is world class. The new CIT visual identity has been created to reflect this position. The identity is anchored by a strong use of the initials – CIT. This creates a mechanism whereby all the activities of CIT can be clearly linked at all times. Strong colours and a clean typeface add to the strength of the new identity.

Mannings Bakery required a new design solution for labeling that worked seamlessly across four product ranges and, could also be adapted for use by their customers, who had own-brand requirements. The new design demonstrates the ability of designers to solve complex problems when clearly defined. The lateral and horizontal labels break with the normal style of packaging and by restricting them to two sizes made them cost effective to produce. The design have now been adopted by several of the multiples including one of Spain’s largest supermarket chains.

While this project was completed a good number of years ago it is worty of a mention as it had many distinct challenges. Firtsly, the product had to appeal to wide range of people across Europe. Secondly, the imagse used had to transend national and cultural barriers and finally, there were sixteen different languages to be incorporated in groups of four onto each box. The languages were translated by local translators and a system was devised to control the proofing and integration of the languages onto the packaging.
The key to this project was the dedicated team provided by the client with a detailed brief and the creativity of design professional who yet again can come up with the solutions when challenged.
